Construction Methods
Signature Collection: Our S. Barlow Signature Collection pieces feature traditional artisan joinery and refinements that make them something special. Stephen's Signature pieces are solid lumber and feature wide boards, often 10"+, boards are carefully chosen for color, grain-matching and character. In chests, the front divider rails are hand dovetailed into the case. Drawers feature reproduction dovetails and glide smoothly on hardwood dovetailed drawer runners. Full-extension and soft close drawer guides can be quoted. Drawer bottoms are solid Baltic Birch, offering exceptional strength, stability and a pleasing look. The backing is well fit into rabbeted sides, is made from same species wood as the rest of the piece and finished as well. Tables are crafted using traditional pegged mortise & tenon joints where aprons meet the legs. Table tops feature wide boards of exceptional character. Beds are joined using a steel rail system which offers both ease of assembly and lasting strength. All our beds offer a full hardwood slat system and extra supports for Queen & King sizes. Extensive hand work goes into the preparation of all our furniture prior to finish providing exceptional clarity and releasing the full character of the wood. Each piece is individually signed and dated. Our construction methods provide unparalleled strength and stability - these pieces will stand strong over their multi-generational life span.
Heirloom Collection: Our Heirloom Collection pieces feature the best tradition of New England craftsmanship with contemporary design from small local shops. All pieces are solid lumber, well chosen for color and character match. In chests, all divider and structural rails are joined to case sides using mortise & tenon joints. In addition to hardwood structural rails, corner blocks are used keeping the face-less cabinets square and rigid. Solid panels are used to separate each drawer, a 'floating' panel system is used so that the wide lumber sides are allowed to move with the seasons. Drawers feature half-blind dovetails and glide smoothly on hardwood dovetailed drawer runners. Drawer bottoms are solid reinforced panels offering strength, stability and are finished for a pleasing look. Tables are crafted using a wooden corner block that is let into the aprons, glued and screwed. Legs are removable and are bolted through the wooden corner blocks for attachment, offering the ability to be easily stored or transported. Extra care is taken in the preparation of all our furniture prior to finish, each piece is hand sanded to a high level for excellent clarity and carefully inspected prior to finish. Beds are joined either a through-bolt & tenon or steel rail system, both of which offer ease of assembly and lasting strength. All these beds offer a full hardwood slat system and extra supports of Queen & King sizes. Chairs are joined with exceptionally tight tolerances in tenon-to-socket joinery and some using wedged tenons. Legs and spindles are kept at lower than average moisture content prior to assembly, that way, they will swell into place, after being tapped & glued into an already tight socket, once returning to normal moisture content. These pieces are built to last and will be enjoyed by successive generations.
All our furniture is not only highly crafted, but exceptionally well designed for functionality as well as a graceful appearance. Both collections offer high value.
