History History

Stephen Barlow originated Shaker Style in 1989 as a one-person furniture building business working out of a small garage in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Stephen is a third-generation New England woodworker who takes pride in carrying on the tradition of excellence passed down to him by his grandfather and great-grandfather. He still uses many of their tools today. His creativity is enhanced by his associate degree in construction technology.

By 1990, in response to steady growth, Shaker Style moved to larger quarters. Stephen purchased an 18th century farmhouse in historic Harrisville, New Hampshire. Formerly a livery stable, the large barn was converted into a woodshop and cozy showroom. And as Shaker Style continued to grow and flourish Stephen’s wife, Cheryl, joined him in 1997 as co-proprietor. Cheryl has worked in sales all of her life and now puts her talents to work here.

Since 1999, Stephen has been invited to demonstrate his craft at Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield, MA. He has also demonstrated fine furniture making at Fruitland's Museum in Harvard, MA. His work has been juried into the Sharon Arts Gallery in Peterborough, NH, and the Keene Art Walk in Keene, NH.

Stephen is a member of New Hampshire Timber Owners Association, Historic Harrisville, The Friends of the Dublin Art Colony, New Hampshire Made and Business Network International. Articles about his work have been published in many newspapers and magazines and he has been interviewed often, notably by Boston Channel 5 for the TV show Chronicle.
